Talented danish journalist Hans Henrik Lichtenberg just made me aware of the Society for News Design’s annual News Design contest. Hans Henrik mentions one of the winners, who also won in 2000. While I agree with him that it does make a design that stands out, wouldn’t it have been fun if they had named a famous blog the winner? That would atleast make those newspapers who haven’t realised the potential of blogs yet, re-think their strategy. The winner he mentions, Hartford Courant, is not the world’s largest newspaper though. It has a circulation of about 250000, for comparison danish newspaper Berlingske Tidende has a circulation of about 130000. Another innovative design, beside the blog, could be electronic paper, why haven’t someone done a prototype and showed it to the SND?

If you take a close look at 2005 you maybe recognize that Design is on the Agenda here, there and everywhere.

From my chair a lot is going on  - not that I’m involved in everything, but in my “surroundings” a lot is going on.

INDEX:2005 has their headquarters located here at DDC – where I work – and the activity-level is exploding these days.

The concept behind INDEX:2005 is VERY interesting and contains 3 different projects:

  1. Future Scenarios
  2. Award
  3. Views

Maybe you should consider to visit Copenhagen in September?

I’ll promise you a featured Interview with Kigge Hvid – Director of INDEX: in a week or two :-)

John Tunney recently pointed me to Creax’s Creativity Test. Before attending the test I thought it would be worthless, but after trying the test and receiving my results I am actually pretty impressed. The questions are hands-on creativity tests and they seem to create the right result instantly.

I scored 80.01 and the average is 61.41, below is my detailed results.

One of my favorite gurus in design is Bruce Mau. We share a deep perception that the value of design process is much larger than the value of the outcome.

I haven’t even thought about mentioning him here because it all makes sense to me. But seeing as how not all of you are "design hippies" like me, I better mention him. He wrote a manifesto which is a quick-reader and a must-read for anyone involved in design in any matter. I often use quotes from his manifesto in my design documentation, and you could too!

Talking of tomorrows big industries I came across something a little interesting. A concept firm made a prototype for memory rich clothing. Clothing that remembers who you are and what you do, that is. Maybe Paris is the next high tech Silicon Valley?

You say Asia’s a low-wage only economy. I, Tom Peters, Hans Henrik and others say the opposite. Asia might battle us a little of low-wage, but the big deal is in creativity, innovation, design and the like. Bloomberg in Tokyo seems to have understood that. They made a Smart Space that displays financial data and news, but the data is triggered by human moves. That means if you move your hands upwards and wave, then the data follows you. This is quite amazing, why haven’t we seen more of this before? Why do we see this in Asia first? I know that Bloomberg is an american company, but that’s not the deal here.

I must admit I love photoretouches. Being a graphic designer I ofcourse love to do it myself, but most of all I love looking a good photoretouching. It’s everywhere today. Try looking at an ad that hasn’t been heavily photoretouching. Oops - having trouble finding that ad? Primarily everyone retouch today, it’s not that big a crime. I am not just talking about making yourself or others look better, but also adding effects or removing objects.

Recently Todd Dominey pointed me to the portfolio of a photoretouching company, and boy do they do some great stuff! Try looking at some of their car ads. My skills started getting better and better when I got into a good network some years ago, but I am lightyears of practice from this!

I came by Manyworlds today – a huge and important resource when it comes to Strategy, Innovation and Future.

The site is useful when trying to grab the trends of today, when in need for help, process and methods. Personally I like the area about Innovation at the most. It’s a good read.

Joyce Wycoff recently spoke with Austin Henderson at Pitney Bowes.  Austin has
served as the Director of both Pitney Bowes’ Concept Studio and its
downstream partner, the Systems Lab, which seeks to commercialize the
concepts that emerge.

Austin shared the four tests they use at Pitney Bowes to determine if a concept merits full-scale development:

1.  Does it work for customers?
2.  Is it technically feasible?
3.  Can it stand on its own as a business?
4.  Does it fit the brand portfolio?
