One of our main goals are aiming at networking between likeminded people within design and innovation. I thought it would be great for a post where you could comment and introduce yourself and maybe get to know some of the other readers.

From our hostname tracking I have seen visitors come from Hewlett-Packard, Philips, GAP, Logiva, McKeanney-Flavell, Gerard Hilferty & Associates, Katzenbach Partners, Harrington College of Design, Harvard University, York University, Danish Ministry of Education and Technical University of Denmark. Who are you and where do you come from? :-)

Update: It seems there was a lot of interest in this and we have taken note of that. We appreciate all your replies, but I suppose a lot of people are still hiding in the bushes? Don’t be, there’s atleast 24 contacts to gain right now and the list is growing. So why not write a small comment, you’ve got a lot to win and nothing to lose. Besides the organizations named above, I have recently seen visitors coming from Kontrapunkt, The US Army (!), Rigshospitalet (Copenhagen University Hospital), Nazareth College, East Stroudsburg University and Pacific Market International - why don’t you introduce yourself? I know I’d love to get to know you.

I am Chris Downs, a partner in the Service Innovation and Design company: live|work. Based in London, we are responsible for pioneering the new discipline of Service Design. I have been regularly reading CPH127 and use it for all that web digging I never get the time to do these days. I have been particularly interested in some of the discussion around the future role of design and I’m keen to see how that evolves. On behalf of all those of us who don’t have the time or energy to pull these debates together - thanks! And keep going!

Chris Downs May 30th, 2005 at 5:23 pm

Isn’t live|work really one of the only pure service design firms around? Could you mention some others? We actually had a discussion some time ago and your firm was mentioned for it’s excellence :-) Thanks for taking the time to write a brief introduction, hope others will do the same!

Simple and great idea for a posting. Let’s hope to hear from many folks.

I’m Steve Portigal, based in Montara, California, a tiny town just outside of San Francisco, and just outside of Silicon Valley.

I operate a small consulting business that brings together user research (”ethnography”), design, and business strategy, and I’m interested in dialogues like this one where the margins and intersections among these practices are probed and considered.

Steve Portigal May 30th, 2005 at 6:18 pm

I’m Jess McMullin, based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I’m founding principal at nForm User Experience, a consultancy that helps clients succeed through improving the whole customer experience, with a focus on interactive channels.

I’ve been a long time advocate of value-centered design looking at the intersection of business goals and user goals, and appreciate CPH127’s contributions to the conversation.

Jess McMullin May 30th, 2005 at 8:11 pm

I’m Michael Carøe Andersen currently based in Aalborg where I’m finishing up on my master in Informatics. Relocating to Ann Arbor, Michigan in July.

I’m reading this blog and related because of the interesting posts.

I’m Joshua Kaufman from London, England. I’m an information architect at Framfab, a full service web design business with a focus on user centered design. I read cph127 mostly because I’m interested in learning more about design and innovation as a business strategy and how these ideas can be more integrated into our projects.

Joshua Kaufman May 30th, 2005 at 10:28 pm

Dragos Novac - Bucharest, Romania. Internet entrepreneur currently running Krogos which is a Bucharest-based software company. Very interested in disrupting business concepts and innovative ways of doing things.

I’ve discovered and been reading cph127 from the very first days, via a referral which I cannot remember just now. It’s good stuff and plenty of food for thought.

I will be at Reboot next week and hopefully I’ll also get to meet personally with some of you. :)

Dragos Novac May 30th, 2005 at 11:34 pm

I’m Chris Corrigan, a consultant and facilitator specializing in conversation practices and self-organizing community and organizational development. I am an experienced practitioner of Open Space Technology and have a deep interest in group process design to marry passion and responsibility to get things done.

Chris Corrigan May 31st, 2005 at 12:09 am

My name’s David Beihoff, and I just concluded my first year of graduate studies at the Institute of Design in Chicago. My focus is human centered product design, which, along with furniture, rules my world. In the last nine months I have been exposed to the concept of approaching business from a design perspective, and have grown very interested in this notion. I also hear the word ‘Innovation’ thrown around a lot, which I suppose is one of the reasons I’m here.

As school has recently ended, I am looking for a job/internship, so if anyone’s interested in helping out a future designer/innovator/whatever you want to call it, let me know. ;-)

I think I’m “the visitor from York University”… I don’t think I have any credentials worth mentioning right now, but I plan to start writing a book on design over the summer (you can check out my blog to see some of the things I’m thinking about…)

Quite random! I’ve never been contacted through Bloglines before… I’m a freelance web standards specialist living and working in London. Mostly I contract as a CSS/accessibility expert but I’ve been doing more user experience consulting of late, and that’s something I’m looking to move into. I love the Internet and I’m facinated by how different people use it.

Hi, I’m Ian McArthur, a designer and design educationalist based in Byron Bay, NSW. I am interested in multidisciplinary and collaborative design practices. My real passion is the evolution of design practice in China after several years working in Shanghai as Program Director of Visual Communications at an international design college there. I am also a director within a fledgling East/West alliance known as Birds & Fish Communications.

Ian McArthur May 31st, 2005 at 5:35 am

I am Professor of Design and Management at the Ecole des Mines de Paris and permanent guest Professor at the Fenix Center of The Chalmers Institute of Goteborg. I am also deputy director of the Center for Management Science. My research work has been about the theory and history of both management and Design which have strong historical links. Since 1996 I have been developing a unified Design theory which is grounded on both the history of Design and important results in modern set theory. This theory, called C-K theory, have been very useful for empirical research programs on innovative firms and on knowledge creation in design processes. Papers can be found on our website : search “hatchuel C-K theory” with any navigator. I have published several books (one has been translated in english : Experts in organizations. A knowledge based perspective on organizational change, with B.Weil, Walter de Gruyter 1995) and articles and I am member of the editorial boards for Organization Studies and Organization Science. In 1996, I was awarded a french large media prize for my work in Management and I received in 2003 the medal of the National School of Arts et Metiers for my work in Design theory. I am columnist for Management issues at the french newspaper « Le Monde

I am currently a graduate student at Interaction Design Institute Ivrea. Before moving to Italy I obtained a graduate degree in Economics, at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, The Netherlands. I am interested in the development of highly interactive digital and physical environments and products using technology. Investigate how the challenges of economic viable design affect product or service performance in the marketplace and explore new business models.

More lately I have been interested in home appliances and how to develop products that interact on an affective level. Elements of surprise and discovery. Affective computing, using technology to communicate emotion, not exclusively functionality. Braking mental models and rethinking usage, for both digital and physical products or interfaces.

Additionally, I am interested in an investigation to illustrate that a social, emotional and community based approach to design is increasingly becoming a critical success driver for the creation of high-end services, information based offerings and sustainable business development.

My name is Renato and I am a student at HyperWerk FHBB in Switzerland. HyperWerk cares about designing the media, interactions, processes and knowledge for the future of education, culture and work.

Before, I worked as a ScreenDesigner for an Internet agency. I am interested in the combination of different topics and how they affect each other: people, communities, crowds, society, information, aesthetics, design, real/virtual, places and “a-places”.

In 2006 I will graduate - in my diploma year I will deal with the topics city, exhibition, public spaces, detournement, cognition, placing information…

Wow Jacob, you’ve certainly started something here!

I am from Cape Town, South Africa and have a business called Ideafarm, a business that helps organisations develop different-practice, not best-practice. My short message to businesses is that you can ‘outsource’ both your innovation and your marketing to your customer.

I also guest lecture at Vega Brand School on customer-experience led business design, and use Apple products to work and play with.

My thinking has been influenced by Otto Scharmer, Marshall McLuhan, Peter Senge, IDEO, and have been a Tom Peters convert since the early days :)
Looking forward to some great conversations - let’s get a Skype conference-call podcast going!

Hi, I am Damien Newman and I’m a design consultant based currently in San Francisco. I specialise in business behaviour and helping organizations understand how to use a design process to design services and products.

I’ve worked with organizations like Microsoft, Xerox, HPLabs, Motorola and Real Networks and for companies like Studio Archetype and frog design.

live|work was probably the first company/firm I saw to promote the distinction between product and service design (as Chris mentions) - and from then I followed the field very closely and I’m interested to see how it impacts the role of design in business.

This is a great place for discussion - thanks for putting it together. And thanks live|work for the inspiration.

Hi, My name is Suresini and I am studying Business Development Engineer at HIH in Herning. Right now I am a trainee at Danish Design Center, Copenhagen.

Hi, I am Jacques-Julien Rieme, management master student at EM Lyon and Copenhagen Business School.
Currently writing my master thesis on cities with a Finnish friend. I’ve lived in Copenhagen for 2 years (neaste)
Our purpose is to link social dynamics usually referred ed to as postmodernity, technological possibilities especially in terms of interactivity and branding of public spaces.
After having looked at the semiotization of cities from a tourist perspective, we focus on the stakes of international mobility of qualified workers in relation to representation of self. Basically it’s about digging further in the localization motivations of those R. Florida has called the Creative Class.
Have been visiting cph127 for a few months to get more knowledgeable as design as I believe it increasingly participates in and shapes the broader “reflexive” economy.

Hi,

My name is Niti Bhan and I found CPH 127 while doing research for an article, http://www.core77.com/reactor/03.05_niti_bhan.asp - they are the first “design and innovation” blog I’ve come across and very interesting reading. Thanks, Hans Henrik and Jakob and others.

My main area of interest is the intersection of design and business, from the business point of view. My education includes engineering, business and design.

Steve Portigal and I have a conversation on business aspects of design services at http://sizematter.blogspot.com and I’m currently exploring opportunities in this area. I also work with http://www.core77.com on areas such as how design can best be promoted, whether it’s an education institution or a professional studio.

Past employers include Hewlett Packard India, McCann Erickson Worldwide, The Second City and The Institute of Design.

Hello Folks,

My name is Dan, and I am in the business side of design. I do bizdev for a fantastic mid-sized design firm named ION Design that specializes in design for manufacturing. Our work ranges from Consumer goods, to Virtual Reality Headsets, to Drug Delivery Systems, to Laboratory and Scientific Equipment. We have the obligatory awards for our design work, but we still get the biggest kick from knowing our work is a best seller in our client’s marketplace. After all, isn’t that what we get paid for?;)

I too am interested in the intersection of businesss and design and getting corporations to recognize us as architects vs. bricklayers.
I am also struggling with the idea of an MBA to go with my BSID. My current thinking is to just continue to do the work of business building, while doing all the reading possible.

Cheers!

Hi everyone
Kristoffer from DK with interests in creativity & innovation etc. Especially creativity as I’m writing a book on the subject. Most of my time these days goes on finishing my education as a business development engineer (exam in end of June). For my final thesis I’ve done a project where I’ve examined the innovative climate in a productdevelopment department at a major danish producer of medical products.
Most of the post at CPH127 is maybe a bit off point of what I’m doing now (eg. being design-focused) but that’s just what makes them interesting - diversity u know ;-) Happy blogging
Kristoffer

Hi there

My name’s John Tunney and Jacob asked me to introduce myself here. I suppose I would label myself a ‘creative generalist’. I became interested in creativity aged 14 when I read an Edward De Bono book “De Bono’s thinking course”. From then on I researched creativity and considered how I could improve my personal creativity. Over the years I’ve leaned towards a ‘holy grail’ - a project to devise a systematic approach to writing fiction. The by-product of this project has been some new creativity techniques and some improvements/developments of exisiting creativity and lateral thinking techniques. I publish some of these techniques on my ideas blog. All feedback welcome.
