Sitting here at reboot listening to Paula Le Dieu from Creative Commons about how you can make sure that the origin of an invention is preserved I get some perspectives I wanna share with you

Her examples is from the music scene and quite interesting.

When you apply it to internal design and other innovation project’s – and spice the traditional process up with a flavour of Open Source – you can empower real big resources.

In terms of incremental vs. radical innovation I think it is very interesting and highly relevant for most companies. Is it possible to outsource you innovation/product development when your IP of course is secured?

And what will happen when sharing some of you inventions with the “community”. Will that have any effect on you invention? And what effect would it have on the overall “community-development”/"Development-community""?

My 5 pence is that nothing would happen with you own invention; in the broader perspective we will see a higher innovationrate in general to the benefit to the community.

Reboot Update: Dina Mehta is talking about how tools as blogs, skype and wiki’s can be used for collaboration and research. Her example is how people all over the world collaborated in relation to the Tsunami disaster using these tools and it is a pretty strong case!

Dina is a qualitative researcher and works with companies doing exploratory research and ethnographical studies. It is really interesting seeing how technology can make customer research quicker and cheaper. In additions the same platforms can be used for co-creation, involving the consumers in the development of products, services and messages. Dina stresses that it is an easy and cheap way to get input from all over the world without having to go there (even though that would be much nicer) - and my take is that it gives smaller design consultancies an opportunity to include research and analysis services in their portfolios.

An example from the danish design industry is Designit and their Bluesky Pilots using digital photos from around the world in their work.

Interesting indeed - especially if you follow that thought and apply the same tools inside a company. Then you could build a complete company based on a decentralized self-organizing system…has this been done before? Is their any examples of design consultancy firms completly decentralized?

Another angle that pops up when Dina is using the Tsunami example is that - and I guess this is the same mechanics that needs to be in place in a corporate setting - a sense of urgency (much like the feeling within the organization must be in order to accept that business can not go on as usual) must be established. The organization must give customers a true sense of urgency in order to be able to involve the customer in research and/or development on behalf of the organisation. Customer must feel motivated and have an incentive to help out. In a sense the leadership within the organisation must be spread outside the organisation…the company must lead/help the customers to lead/help the company…

I guess I’m rambling now but nevertheless; whats your view on customer research and customer collaborative development and potential tools for this?

As Hans mentioned I also attend Reboot and right now the Open Sauce workshop (also here). It’s related to open source marketing and their is a discussion about how people collaborate. Which rules we aply to collaboration (this is especially interesting if the participants are free to participate which is not really always the case in a corporate setting).
Is it relevant (is it possible) to be in control of a collaborative process or is it more relevant (and likely) that you settle for a role where you effect the result. How do you get a company to let go of this control?

The "command and control model" is the way marketing  has always worked (and still is). In today’s business environment (the same mechanics that makes "new design", customer driven innovation etc. relevant I guess) this model is viable anymore. It just dont pay off!

I’ve decided to join reboot today – it’s not completely about design and innovation – and then again. New ways of working, organizing, sharing, Open source thinking.

I think it’s exactly what innovation and a new design methodology is all about.

I’ve been at all 6 prior reboot’s and it amazes me every time how much I take with me home, lot’s of new perspectives, friendships and ideas…..

….take a look at the way their website is organized – pretty amazing stuff.

You know the concept of a WIKI? Any experiences? Links maybe?

So i havent been very active lately, caught in the chaos of the graduate show of Interaction Design Institute Ivrea, of which i will be the last class to graduate from next year. This is mainly because the school is being moved to Milan and its ressources severely cut because of the lack of vision of its financial supporters.

This event, insignificant for readers I’m sure, but somewhat major for Interaction design around the world, embodies what was being discussed this week in the value of supporting intense environments where people come from various backgrounds, dont agree and create so many innovative concepts and push the envelope every day. I spent the past year sourrounded by more creativity, a closed community, claustrophobic at times, but thats also what breeds creativity and i do not know of any other place where that exists in the academic world in interaction design.

So for the last time, if you’re next to Turin, show up this friday and saturday and we can have a chat…

In a few days from now I’ll have the possibility to have a talk with Hugh about blogging and about being creative.

Hugh is simply one of the best when it comes to illustrating daily life – it’s a big laugh every time I read his “insight’s” :-)
